Al Garhoud

Al Garhoud is on the Deira side of Dubai Creek, next to the airport, and connects to Bur Dubai and Oud Metha across the Al Garhoud Bridge. It is an older central district, not a new master-planned community.

Al Garhoud grew up around two things: the airport and the creek crossing. It is home to the head office of Emirates Airline and the wider Emirates Group, as well as Emirates Aviation College, which makes it a natural base for airline staff. Dubai International Airport's Terminals 1 and 3 sit on its northern edge, and the Al Garhoud Bridge, rising around 16 metres above the water, carries traffic across Dubai Creek into Bur Dubai and Oud Metha.

The district covers around 4 square kilometres and has one of the lower population densities among Dubai's older neighbourhoods, since a large share of the land is taken up by offices, schools and the airport buffer zone rather than housing.

Al Garhoud does not have the kind of numbered sub-divisions used in Al Barsha or Al Barsha South. Instead, it is understood locally through its landmarks and named pockets, including Al Garhoud Park, a green space used by residents for walking and family time, and the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium and the Irish Village, which sit side by side in Garhoud and are best known for the tennis championships held there each February.

The roads around Al Garhoud are known locally for heavy traffic, particularly at the approaches to the bridge and around the airport terminals during peak hours, which is worth factoring into any commute.

Al Garhoud is unusually well stocked with schools for its size, which is one reason it remains popular with resident families despite the traffic. Schools in or immediately around the district include Cambridge International School Dubai, the New Indian Model School, Gulf Indian High School, Al Mawakeb School, GEMS Legacy School, the Dubai International School and the Grammar School, Dubai, covering British, Indian and American curricula between them.

The Red Line station in the district is Al Garhoud, which was called GGICO until it was renamed in 2025. It is the main public transport link for residents and for Emirates Group staff, and it sits between Airport Terminal 1 and City Centre Deira. By road, Al Garhoud connects directly onto Airport Road and, via the Al Garhoud Bridge, onto the Bur Dubai side of the creek, making it one of the more central crossing points in the city.

Housing in Al Garhoud is a mix of older apartment blocks, some villa compounds, and company accommodation linked to the airport and Emirates Group, alongside a substantial amount of office space. It suits people who want to be close to the airport and to Deira and Bur Dubai, without living inside either.

Al Garhoud is one of Dubai's original municipality districts rather than one of the areas designated for freehold ownership. As in Deira and Bur Dubai, most property here is rented rather than bought outright by foreign individuals, so the area functions mainly as a rental market, including a reasonable supply of company-leased accommodation for airport and airline staff.

The district also carries a disproportionate amount of Dubai's aviation and events infrastructure for its size. Beyond the airport terminals and the Emirates Group head office, Al Garhoud is close to Dubai Festival City, which brings a large waterfront retail and leisure centre within easy reach without being part of Al Garhoud itself. That mix of airport, offices and nearby retail is part of why the area keeps a steady population of long-term tenants rather than the fast turnover seen in some newer districts.

For anyone weighing up Al Garhoud against other central options, the comparison usually comes down to commute patterns: it suits people whose working life revolves around the airport or the creek crossing, more than people who want to walk to Downtown Dubai or the beach. Across the creek, Al Jaddaf and Business Bay are the two areas most often compared with it by people who want a newer, freehold alternative within a similar distance of the centre. Dubai has no postal code system, and Al Garhoud is no exception. Addresses here, as everywhere else in the city, are built around a PO Box at an Emirates Post branch rather than a postcode. Where a form insists on one, entering 00000 is the usual workaround for a UAE address, or the field can be left blank in favour of the building name and nearest landmark, which is what actually gets a parcel delivered in this part of Dubai.
