Al Qudra Lake is a network of man-made lakes in the desert south of the city, set beside the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve and about an hour's drive from Dubai International Airport. People go for sunsets, picnics, cycling and wildlife, and the lakes are close to several villa communities. This guide covers where Al Qudra Lake is, how to get there, what to do, the rules that apply and which nearby communities suit a move.
The lakes are in the desert area of Dubai known as Al Qudra, next to the Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve. A Dubai Media Office article describes Al Qudra Lakes as about an hour's drive from Dubai International Airport, and the starting point of the Al Qudra cycle track is described as being in Al Qudra, in southeast Dubai, near Last Exit Al Qudra. Drive times from the city vary with traffic and with where you start, so use a map app on the day.
The lakes are not one single pond. The Dubai Media Office article names the heart-shaped Love Lakes, Flamingo Lake and Expo 2020 Lake among them, so a visit can mean several stops.
None of the official pages we opened states an entry fee for Al Qudra Lake, and we do not quote one. Dubai Municipality says the Al Marmoom reserve is open to the public all year round. For the latest on access, timings or booking, see the protected areas pages on dm.gov.ae before you set off.
Most visitors drive. The sources we opened do not describe a public transport route to the lakes, so plan around a car or a taxi. Fuel up and carry water before you leave the main roads, because the lakes sit in open desert and facilities are limited. If you want to ride, the cycle track gives you another way to arrive, covered below. Taxis and ride hailing apps work for the outbound leg, but arranging a return trip from the desert can be harder than the trip out, so agree a pick up time if you can.
Dubai Municipality suggests bringing binoculars if you want to watch birds in its open protected areas.
Yes. The Al Qudra Cycle Track was declared by Guinness World Records as the longest continuous cycling path, at 80.6 km, in an announcement by Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority on 22 November 2022. The track passes extensive sand dunes and lakes, and emergency phones are installed at 30 points along it. Because the distances are long and the desert has little shade, riders should carry plenty of water and tell someone their route.
| Item | What the official source says |
|---|---|
| Track length (Guinness record, 2022) | 80.6 km, the longest continuous cycling path |
| Starting point | In Al Qudra, southeast Dubai, near Last Exit Al Qudra |
| Safety | Emergency phones at 30 points along the track |

Al Marmoom is one of Dubai's eight protected areas, managed by Dubai Municipality under Local Order No. 11 of 2003. The order, as summarised on the Municipality's website, prohibits hunting, transporting, killing or disturbing wildlife, removing creatures, organic materials, rocks or soil, destroying or transporting plants, polluting soil, water or air, and building without a permit. In plain terms: take your rubbish with you, keep to marked areas and leave wildlife and plants alone.
The Dubai Media Office article on camping does not list specific camping rules for Al Qudra, and refers campers to Dubai Municipality's Public Health and Safety Department for guidelines on camping outdoors in tents. Contact the Municipality if you plan to camp overnight.
The official pages we opened do not name a best season. Visit Dubai points readers to its weather page for climate details across the year. Common sense applies: the desert is exposed, so the cooler months and the hours around sunrise and sunset are the comfortable choice, and midday in summer is best avoided.
A simple plan for a first visit: go in the late afternoon, park near one of the lakes, walk the shoreline for the light, stay for the sunset and drive home before it is fully dark. Share your location with someone, because mobile signal in open desert cannot be assumed. If you are visiting with children, keep them close to the water edge supervision wise and avoid feeding or chasing the birds.
If you plan to cycle regularly, think about where you would store a bike, how you would carry it to the start and whether your building allows it. These are practical points that affect daily life more than the view.
Several villa and townhouse communities in the south of Dubai are the natural bases for people who want the desert on their doorstep. The ones on our site are listed below. We describe them by type rather than by drive time, because journeys vary by gate and traffic.
| Community | Typical homes | Area page |
|---|---|---|
| Arabian Ranches | Villas and townhouses | Arabian Ranches, Arabian Ranches 2, Arabian Ranches 3 |
| Al Barari | Low density villas and apartments | Al Barari |
| Damac Hills 2 | Townhouses and villas | Damac Hills 2 |
| Tilal Al Ghaf | Villas and townhouses around a lagoon | Tilal Al Ghaf |
Our own area pages show the Dubai Land Department sold prices and current listings for each. For a wider comparison read best villa communities in Dubai for families and Dubai Hills Estate vs Arabian Ranches.
Arabian Ranches and its later phases are among the best known family villa communities on this side of the city, so they come up first for people who want weekend access to the desert. Each phase differs in house type and age, so view a few before deciding. If you are comparing it with a newer master community, the Dubai Hills Estate vs Arabian Ranches guide sets out the differences.
Al Barari is a green, low density community, so people who like cycling and nature often shortlist it. Browse the area page for what is currently listed and the recorded sales.
Damac Hills 2 and Tilal Al Ghaf are newer communities with townhouses and villas. They suit buyers who want a modern home with open space around it. Compare running costs too: our guide to what it costs to run a villa in Dubai covers the bills that sit on top of rent or price.
Living near the desert has trade-offs worth weighing honestly. You gain open space and quiet evenings, but you are further from the main business districts, so test the commute at the time you would really travel. Check the nearest supermarket, school and clinic on a map, and ask the agent about service charges and how the community is managed. Our guide to the best areas to live in Dubai helps you compare these trade-offs across the city.
If you are new to the area, renting for a year lets you test the commute and the lifestyle before you buy. Our guide to renting a villa on an annual contract explains how Dubai tenancies work. If you are buying, buying a villa in Dubai covers the process and costs.
