Al Rigga is a dense residential and commercial neighbourhood in Deira, on the north side of Dubai Creek, centred on Al Rigga Road and served by the Al Rigga and Union metro stations. It is one of the best connected old districts in Dubai: shops, restaurants, hotels and apartments sit on top of each other, the creek and the gold and spice souks are a short ride away, and the Red and Green metro lines meet one stop along at Union.
This al rigga guide covers where it is, what the area is known for, the landmarks and places to visit, the metro and roads, the homes on offer and the downsides. It is written for renters and buyers who want a central apartment, and for anyone who simply wants to know what Al Rigga is.
Al Rigga is known for Al Rigga Road, one of the oldest commercial streets in Dubai, and for the Deira Clocktower roundabout. It is a district of shops, cafes, money exchanges, clinics, offices and hotels at street level, with older apartment buildings above. Together with Al Muraqqabat next door it is a core part of the Dubai Shopping Festival, and it has long been a short stay and business address. Today it is popular with tenants who want to live next to the metro and close to everything, and who accept older buildings and street noise in exchange.
Al Rigga is in eastern Dubai within Deira. It borders Al Sabkha, Al Muraqqabat and Naif, with Dubai Creek on the south side. The area is about 0.89 square kilometres and had a population of 8,222 in 2016, a density of roughly 9,200 people per square kilometre. That density is the main thing to understand: a small area with many people, buildings close together and busy streets.
Local streets form a grid that continues the numbering from Al Muraqqabat. Even numbered streets run northeast to southwest, from 2nd Street near the Bani Yas Cemetery to 44th A Street near Rigga Al Buteen Plaza. Union Square is the district's bus and taxi hub. Al Rigga Road is the main spine, with cafes, shops and hotels along it. Omar bin Khattab Road and Al Maktoum Road are among the main routes around the district.

Al Rigga is one part of Deira. For the bigger picture, including the souks, the Corniche and other districts, read our Deira guide.
People often search for "Rigga Al Buteen" or "Riggat Al Buteen" as well as Al Rigga. Listings and maps mix the names, and sources describe the exact boundary differently. Rigga Al Buteen Plaza is at the end of 44th A Street. Before you rent, check the street, building name and distance to the station, rather than relying on the neighbourhood name in an advert.
The streets around Al Rigga Road are packed with small restaurants and cafes serving food from many parts of Asia, the Middle East and Africa, alongside pharmacies, clinics, grocers and exchange houses. It is a place for a cheap meal and a late evening walk rather than for fine dining or landscaped parks.
Abras, the traditional wooden boats, cross Dubai Creek between Deira and Bur Dubai. The crossings are run under the RTA, so check current routes at rta.ae. A creekside walk towards the old souks is one of the easiest outings from the district.
Al Rigga itself has very little green space. For a larger park or a beach residents travel, for example to Al Mamzar Beach Park on the northern coast, or see our guide to the best parks in Dubai and the night beaches in Dubai.
Housing is almost entirely apartments, mostly in older buildings of low to mid height. Many are known by the owner's family name. You will also find serviced apartments and hotel apartments on and near Al Rigga Road, because the area has long been a short stay and business location. Villas are not part of the picture.

As of November 2026 we do not publish an Al Rigga rent figure, because rents vary a great deal by building, floor and distance to the station. Ask any agent or landlord for registered Ejari examples in the same building and street, and compare several flats before you negotiate.
| Factor | How it affects rent in Al Rigga |
|---|---|
| Walk to Al Rigga or Union station | Shorter walks usually ask more |
| On Al Rigga Road or on a side street | Main road flats are convenient but noisier |
| Building age and lifts | Better kept buildings ask more |
| Parking | A bay adds value in a dense grid |
| Furnished or unfurnished | Furnished flats usually ask more per year |
If you are comparing prices, see the tenant guide. For ownership questions, confirm the title deed for the specific building and read our freehold guide.
Three metro stations serve the area: Al Rigga, Baniyas Square and Union. Al Rigga and Union are on the Red Line and Baniyas Square is on the Green Line, with Union as the interchange where the two lines meet. On the Red Line, Al Rigga sits between City Centre Deira and Union, so one stop takes you to the interchange.
By road, Omar bin Khattab Road and Al Maktoum Road are among the main routes around the district. Parking is limited, and traffic at peak hours is heavy, so test your own commute before signing. See our parking guide for what to ask the landlord.
Hotels and serviced apartments along and near Al Rigga Road keep the area busy with visitors as well as residents. That helps the shops and restaurants stay open late, and it also means a steady flow of traffic and taxis on the main road.
| Area | Character | Metro |
|---|---|---|
| Al Rigga | 0.89 sq km grid of apartments, shops and hotels | Red: Al Rigga, Union. Green: Baniyas Square |
| Deira (whole) | Many districts, souks, Corniche, City Centre Deira | Red and Green, interchange at Union |
| Bur Dubai | Historic core and Al Mankhool, across the creek | Green: Al Ghubaiba, Sharaf DG. Red and Green: BurJuman |
| Al Karama | 1.5 sq km grid of low-rise rental blocks | Red: ADCB, BurJuman |
The practical difference is that Al Rigga is on the Deira side of the creek and puts you one stop from the Red and Green lines interchange at Union. Bur Dubai and Al Karama sit on the other side, with BurJuman as their interchange. If your workplace is in Deira, the airport side or the north, Al Rigga tends to cut the commute. If it is on the Sheikh Zayed Road corridor, the Red Line serves both sides.
Mornings start early on Al Rigga Road, with shops opening, commuters walking to the metro and delivery vehicles stopping in the street. Midday is quieter in residential side streets and busy around cafes and restaurants. In the evening the main road fills with shoppers, hotel guests and diners, and it can stay active late. Residents on side streets usually find it calmer than flats on the main road. If you are a light sleeper, choose a higher floor or a street away from Al Rigga Road, and check which way the bedroom window faces.
Most demand here is for renting. If you are thinking about buying, start by confirming the title deed, then ask for the latest service charge statement and any planned major works. Older buildings can need lift, plumbing or air conditioning replacement, and the cost is shared between owners. Check whether an owners' association is active. Our DLD fees guide explains the transfer costs, and our service charge index guide shows how to check what a fair charge looks like. Ask for recently registered sales in the same building rather than relying on an advertised price.
